How to write meanings into objects
Christoph Niemann is an illustrator, how's job is to make the reader understand somewhat of the content in the new addition of the New Yorker before they’ve look past the front cover. His style of work, and working is how he communicates so evidently.
The subject is given to him and then he thinks about the best way to visualize this hot new topic on a A4 magazine cover. A lot of the time simplicity is the answer as he's not just trying to communicate to the experts of this subject, but rather crate an appeal to the citizens of New York, which makes for a wide target audience. The principles of his work are to entice, relate and educate with one simple image.
Christoph Niemann was given a brief on augmented reality. This is when graphics, audio and virtual enhancement are integrated into a real-world setting to manipulate or interact with the Imediat surroundings and objects.
Augmented reality, illustrated by Christoph Niemann
His objective was to translate this other world experience into something fun and relatable to New York. So, he came up with the idea of using the subway because of its other worldly experience of New York. By choosing the subway, which is a part of the daily commute for the vast majority he can relate this topic of augmented reality to New York citizens.
He represented augmented reality in three different ways on the magazine.
· The concept of being two places at ones – inside and outside.
· The two different perspectives of the same image – front and back.
· The contrasts to city environments – above ground and underground.

As well as making the subject relatable to New York citizens, his choice of colour to represent the New York city seen is black, gray and yellow which he describes as the ‘perfect New York colour pallet’. The yellow acting as the contrast, separating the cabs from the cars and highlighting the edge of the subway platforms.
